Swedish vehicle inspection company Opus Bilprovning aims to help Swedish car owners offset their carbon footprint

As of 3 July, Swedish roadworthiness inspectors Opus Bilprovning, will offer its private car owner customers the opportunity to offset their carbon footprint. The new service provides information about a vehicle’s carbon footprint and calculates how much each owner ‘owes’ the planet since the last roadworthiness inspection.

Information about a vehicle’s carbon footprint is free of charge and is noted on the customer’s vehicle inspection report. Emissions from the average motorist are around 3 tonnes per year, which cost about SEK 520 per year to offset. Individual customers are free to choose whether or not to offset their driving. The money goes to the Nakau programme, which is involved with forestry conservation in the Pacific region.

The new service is part of Opus’ long-term strategy of contributing to a greener planet.

“Our initiative for reducing vehicle carbon footprints comprises many parts and this represents one method of increasing our customers’ environmental awareness,” says Tord Fornander, Opus Bilprovning Vice President.

Environmental work is nothing new for Opus; the company has long been working to mitigate the consequences of vehicle emissions. Opus works constantly to reduce its overall environmental impact and offsets what remains in a number of conservation projects around the world.

“At Opus, we offset for our entire operation, which is unique. We are probably the first company in the Nordic region to meet every requirement for classification as a climate neutral company. By providing our customers with the same opportunity to shoulder responsibility, we’re taking another step in the right direction,” says Per Rosén, Opus Bilprovning CEO.
